How we teach values to our toddlers.
Like most, we always have goals for ourselves. Career, fitness, health, and life goals. When Iain & I got serious within our relationship and started planning our life as a couple, we thought into the future and we knew we wanted children. We thought about how we wanted to raise them and the values we wanted to instil in them, but that thought was more on a broad spectrum.
What we didn’t think about were the small steps in how to teach those values through short increments of time. We didn’t think about how to break down teaching these children specific values and especially in ways that young minds can comprehend.
The baby years, have been about showering them with hugs, kisses, fun, games, and keeping them safe. For us, navigating a new way of life as parents, while surviving the sleeplessness.
With the baby years almost behind us, we really find the need for more structure and intent in our life. We have put systems in place to help us manage the day to day tasks. That has been the best decision thus far for us as individuals who want to thrive as our best selves.
Now that I have the time to focus on the small details, I want to break down the values that are most important for the kids to learn.
Education, Personal Growth & Adventure
We have decided to home school our kids. Priorities at ages three, two and under one are letter/number recognition, colours, logic comprehension, counting, basic math, reading, etc. Our expectations are blown away and they amaze us at how much they can learn so young with focused attention.
Now that we have prioritized scheduled learning into each day, I am breaking down what I feel are positive personality traits that the kids need to learn to drastically help them further along in life. To live a life with fulfillment and purpose. In comes personal growth…
Moving forward, each month we are going to focus on one specific personality trait and cater the learning, activities, & outings to focus on and include that trait. I am working along side our nanny Arianne to choose these traits that will be easy for toddlers to grasp and are important for their forming personalities to learn from the beginning. The activities and learning done will have a bigger picture type of intent behind them. Education and personal growth will now partner hand in hand in the learning process.
Adventure seems to be easy with little kids. They love exploring and most activities and outings are an adventure for them. We try to provide both guided and self directed play to promote creativity and imagination.
